Reminder: Malta Youth Press Launch

09 October 2008

The Malta Youth Press would like to extend an invitation to you to attend its launch event, an open debate on Media Ownership on October 11 at Melita Garden, Attard. The event is planned to begin at approximately 10am.

The debate will be composed of a panel of journalism and media veterans (like for examply: Miriam Dalli, Fr.Saviour Chircop, Reno Bugeja and Vanessa Macdonald), chaired by a single individual who will field questions which the panel will discuss and also take questions freely from the audience.

Thanks to this panel composed of individuals widely recognised as amongst Malta’s most capable journalists and media veterans, the MYP's open debate promises to shine the spotlight on the elements which interfere with the media’s objective and ethical function, and whether bias or influence can ever be justified in journalism or the media in general.

The debate will also coincide with MYP’s Official Launch. All young journalists, media workers, communication students or individuals holding a general interest in the media also welcome to join. MYP is the first ever Maltese youth press organisation that provides an effective and efficient means for young journalists, grouped within it, to work jointly for the development of journalism and to strengthen friendly relations and collaboration among journalists, the media industry and with the Institute of Maltese Journalists.

The association’s principal aim is to strengthen the role of youth media and to create a network platform for young journalists and media students at a national and international level.

We would appreciate being able to welcome you at our event.

Experience is not necessary, knowledge is optional – enthusiasm is key! All equipment will be provided.

Below is a list of the posts available. If you would like more information or would like to take on a role –as an individual or as a team- contact Andy immediately on 99441166 or by e-mail at info@comma.org.mt.
Closing date for applying is 7th March 08.

NOTE: All roles are open to all students. Students of Communication Studies will be given preference.

AUDIO

If you hate it when songs fade out while performers are already walking off stage or the compere sounds like a toilet flushing, then this role is for you.
Before the show, the audio director needs to coordinate between the performer and sound crew to ensure the audio needs of all items taken care of. During the show, you will coordinate with the soundman and the show director to make sure everything runs smoothly. You will also be playing out any backing music/effects.
Requirements: Good planning, a good ‘ear’ for detail. Able to use a computer to play MP3s.

Requirements: a good planner and good communicator. Must be able to use a computer to play videos.

Video Editor
After the show, all the show footage will be collected and combined into a DVD. You will need to get all the raw footage, video clips, animations and music together and edit them into a finished feature-length DVD.

Get Ready for a Rockin’ Show!

06 February 2008

The time has finally come to begin preparations for the event that all students look towards in anticipation: Students’ Fest! At last, it’s time to put those books aside, forget about results and get yourselves ready for what we are hoping to be the most whimsical Students’ Festival so far. This year’s show will take place on two nights as usual on the 12th and 13th April 2008, giving you loads of time to prepare your fantastic items...but don’t get too lazy, auditions for comperes will be held on the 23rd February, whilst general auditions will be in the 15th March.

There will be two judging panels appointed for this year’s Students’ Festival. The compere auditions will be judged by the Culture and Entertainment officers as well as four other members of the KSU Executive Board. The general auditions, however, will include prominent personalities involved in the arts, as well as the Culture and Entertainment officers. The judges will be looking for innovation, energy, and most of all people who exhibit a desire to entertain!

This year’s show, like most years, will be adhering to a theme. It is important for all potential participants to read the KSU Students’ Festival 2008 Guidelines in order for them to know exactly what the theme will entail, and how the show will revolve around it. Obviously, if there are any queries, suggestions or clarifications which need to be discussed do not hesitate to contact Sean Buhagiar or Ann Dingli.

We would like to urge those people who have never taken part in Students’ Festival to try it out this year. The process is an invaluable one, allowing you to freely express yourself, put your talents to use, mix with your peers, and most of all have a great time. We can safely say that Students’ Festival will surely make for a much more profound university experience, for any kind of student.

Time Tables

16 January 2008

Now that CCT is placing time tables on their own website, we think it's unnecessary duplication to also put them on our site, and run the risk of missing an update and confusing everyone.

So as of now, please use the CCT website to check for all time tables. They are located in the Support Section - http://www.cct.um.edu.mt/html/m09-00-00.htm.

Also, CCT send out notifications (including Time Table updates) through the University e-mail system, and will only send updates to your University e-mail address. However, you can set up your University account to forward all e-mails to any other e-mail address you use regularly. For more info about this, see http://www.comma.org.mt/faq-emailforward.asp

15 January 2008

Dates: 3rd-14th February

Place: Suceava (North of Romania),

Who: Malta, Italy, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, England and Romania

Participants: We are looking for 4 persons who are interested in media (film production) and 5 persons who are interested in art, no experience required...we look mostly for people who are up to having lots of fun and who want to meet other Europeans...

Participants must be aged 16-25 and must be Maltese citizens. Media is given a lot of importance in this event, because we want that these projects are filmed so that they are advertised to youths like us. There will be a special team working on it throughout the project. Some of the people are amateurs and total beginners but some others invovlved in the whole projects even have a masters degree in this stuff.

There will be a production after each country visited to show how the different countries implimented the project, finally they will be edited into one dvd.

The Project:
The project concerns the environment which includes Malta, Italy, Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and England. The project in England took place in November and Romania will be next.

Romania will take the theme of recycling and together with an international team make a huge 10 x 10 m puzzle to expose in a square. Apart from that there will be discussions and visits to the amazing monastries, it will be snowing so you may also go ice skating in the free time.

Now your role as a person interested in media is not to make the puzzle, but be involved with an international team there to film the whole project.

You will not necessarily be participating in the workshops, but you will be filming them with the media team.

Cost: 70% of the travel costs will be reimbursed in Euro cash in Romania, and you will just have to pay the remaining 30%. If tickets are bought early this will be really cheap.

Approximately it should only cost you around Lm50-60 (EUR 116-140) and food and accommodation in Romania is free, apart from a participation fee of Lm5 (EUR 11.65).

Any other things you decide to do you must pay for yourself.

Accommodation: boarding school, which of course will be empty from students as they will be on holiday.

I promise you its an experience you wont forget!

For more info do not hesitate to contact Alberta Borg on bb_5587@yahoo.com or on 79883344.

ERASMUS Exchange - Application Closing Date!

14 January 2008

In our previous newsletter, we said that the deadline to apply for the ERASMUS exchange programme is the 2nd of March 2008.

We have been informed that, actually, the ERASMUS office in Malta has NOT YET ISSUED a call for applications for ERASMUS exchanges for the next academic year (08/09). It will be issued on the 5th February 08 and the deadline will be the 29th February 08, which is next month, so get ready for it!

ERASMUS Exchange - Especially 1st years!

04 January 2008

As you may know, our University offers the chance to spend a period of study in a foreign University. The deadline to apply for this exchange programme is the 2nd of March this year. This is to apply for an exchange next academic year (ie. starting September/October 2008).

Want to experience academic life in a foreign university? A different culture and ambience to ours? Meeting up with all sorts of people including other Erasmus students from all over Europe?

Erasmus is open to different students currently attending undergraduate and post-graduate courses. So why don’t you head down to the International and EU Office at Room 106 in the Administration Building of the University of Malta during 10.00 - 12.00 from Monday to Friday and see what Erasmus has to offer for you? This could be your next big thing and a leap in your life. Make your university experience unique!

This is especially useful for B.Communications 1st year students, as it is not recommended that students go on an Erasmus exchange in their final year (which is the 3rd or 4th year in the B.Communications or B.Communications(Honours) cases respectively).

For further information, get in touch with us or the EU Office as above, or visit http://www.eu-unit.um.edu.mt/erasmus/erasmus.html.

The Sage Journal website has opened it portal until the end of November. Students can do key word searches and download any journal articles published by Sage, that may be of interest to them for research purposes.

Hello Creatives!

18 November 2007

Think about how boring life would be if we were all the same. Man, woman, young, old, gay, lesbian, white, black, with or without disabilities, Catholic or Muslim ... diversity is what makes the world exciting and colourful - something the European Union has long understood! That’s why it has launched its latest competition with an advertisement spot on MTV to raise awareness of how all of us can benefit from diversity and equality.

The competition is part of the 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities for All, an EU-wide action year that runs in parallel with the five-year 'For Diversity, Against Discrimination' campaign. Part of its mission is to inform the public that there are laws to protect people that are discriminated against because of their gender, racial and ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation, age and disability.

We want you to get involved by getting creative. A film, photo, poster, collage - anything visual will do. If it represents your views on diversity and equality, we want to see it. The competition’s entry period will run until 8 December and the winner will be announced on 17 December 2007. You have the chance to win a trip for two valued at € 4.000 to your favourite European city!
To enter the competition, please visit the DiverseCity webpage - http://www.eudiversity.com

European-vibes is an initiative which presented young people with the opportunity to share their impressions and perceptions of what Europe was, is and continues to be. Now European-vibes is coming to Malta and is holding an exhibition with a number of entries submitted.

The exhibition will be launched by means of a reception on the 2nd of October, 2007 - 11:00am at Rafiki's Exhibition Area, adjacent to the University of Malta.

An 'inspirations book' will be made available for you to leave your comments and to share your thoughts with us. Every day the most thought provoking contribution, or the one with the strongest message will win a free dive courtesy of h20divers. Being a European Commission initiative, this 'inspirations book' will then be sent off to the European Commission in Brussels, where they will study all the entries. SO make your voice heard!!

The exhibition will remain open until the 5th October; the 'inspirations book' will be available until the end of the exhibition.

The reception will be opened by Ms. Joanna Drake (head of European Commission Representation in Malta). Being held in the spirit of Speak Up Europe, all attendants at the reception will have the chance to share their views should they want to. (Should you like to acquire more information about this kindly contact sg@jefmalta.net). We are not often invited to voice our opinion, so let's make the most of this one!

This exhibition should be of special interest to you, Communications Students ;o)

This launch is being held in conjunction with JEF-Europe, European Commission and the Commission's representative office in Malta.

Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact us.

In thanking you for your time, I look forward to seeing you again at the reception whilst enjoying a nice chat and refreshments :)

This Maltese movie, an adaptation of the book of the same title by Mr. Frans Sammut, will then be shown on a scheduled basis at our cinemas from the 7th of March.

On the 5th of March a special public screening will be held at the Eden Cinemas at 9:30am. The Director Mr. Mario Phillip Azzopardi, the Producer Mr. Sammy Cremona and the book Author Mr. Frans Sammut will be present for a panel discussion ensuing the screening. Needless to say that this is a unique opportunity for the Maltese public, scholars and film connoisseur to meet and question the creators of one of the most controversial films in recent Maltese history.

The movie "Gagga" is a socio-political film based on Frans Sammut’s novel Il-Gagga. The film outlines the hot social, political and religious issues that created unwritten parameters to all those living in Malta in the early 1970s.

The story evolves around Fredu, a young man who is struggling to cope with the immeasurable difficulties he encounters. Social and religious prejudice, political differences, taboos concerning intimacy and urban to rural dissimilarity, make Fredu feel caged.

Even though this film was a product of University students in 1971, it remains extremely topical and influential in today’s day and age. It is also one of Malta’s first cinematographic masterpieces which involved a long list of local talents which includes: RAY CAMILLERI, VITORIN GALEA, CHARLES ARRIGO, VICTOR APAP, MARILENA BOR:, KARMEN AZZOPARDI, ROSETTE FENECH, JOSEPHINE ZAMMIT CORDINA, CHARLES THAKE, :EMMA PORTELLI & LINO BRIGULIO.

Directed by acclaimed local talent of international fame MARIO PHILLIP AZZOPARDI, “Gagga” is a 75-minute feature movie filmed over 35 years ago but transferred to digital format and enhanced by Studio 7 Productions from 2005 till 2007.

Speaking of test blues, what better way to get your social life back on track than a night of good music and mad, crazy debauchery*/quiet drink* with friends? On the 3rd of February we will be throwing our first official event at Hacienda, and while it's organised by CommA together with USTA (University Student-Teachers Association), it is open to all members, friends, lovers, partners and enemies - in other words, it's open to all.

So keep the night free -remember, Saturday 3rd February- and come join us, bringing friends and good moods. More info soon…

We have added a FAQ about how to set up e-mail forwarding on your University e-mail account. By doing this, e-mails sent to your University e-mail address are automatically forwarded to a private e-mail address of your choice.

New Website!

31 December 2006

We have just finished reworking the CommA website and official logo. They have been rebuilt from the ground up and given a fresh, glowing blue look thanks to the great design skills of Matthew Attard Navarro.

But as we all know, it's not all about looks. We have already put online the test week time table and time tables for lectures in the second semester. Go check them out now! You will also be notified about any changes once you register (also on the website).

And that's not all... The website is made up of YOU! We have dedicated sections to your own creations. We don't care if it's video, audio, writings or hieroglyphics, if it can be put on the web, we'll put it there.

Eventually, there will also be a section dedicated to past students (aka. Alumni), where they will tell their story about what happened once they graduated... should be an interesting read.

To round it off, there is also the obligatory News to read (which you're doing right now), photo gallery to view and all the necessary contact details to get in touch with us. Keep your eyes open for more.

CommA resurges

20 November 2006

Finally! The Communications Students Association, which has been dormant since 2003, has been resurrected by a group of 6 2nd year CCT students. The name of the original association -CommA- has been kept. Apart from being a shortened version of (and not quite a mouthful as) the full name, it is also a clear reference to the punctuation mark most loved, and loathed, by most, if not all, media workers, and their friends (ok ok, I'll stop).

The motto of the organisation is 'Be Active'. B.Communication students, students with Communications as a subsidiary area, or any students with a passing interest in communications are invited to join CommA and be active in all its activities.

More news will follow as things start to take shape.
